Between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.
Friday, May 6, 2022, will mark the 10th Annual School Lunch Hero Day. School Lunch Hero Day is a chance to showcase the difference school nutrition professionals make for every child who comes through the cafeteria.
“School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state, and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes,” said Susan D’Amico, director of the Child Nutrition Services Department.
Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias in Aldine ISD always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats.
School Lunch Hero Day has been celebrated annually since 2013. This year, the School Nutrition Association has partnered with Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the Lunch Lady graphic novel series, to remind everyone — directors, managers, parents, students, and school staff — that school nutrition employees are superheroes that deserve some recognition.
School Lunch Hero Day gives everyone the perfect opportunity to recognize the hardworking professionals in your school cafeterias and thank them for providing healthy meals to Aldine students each school day.
